Tamil Wedding


Tamil marriages are quite simple and not very showy and extravagant as Tamilians believe in simple living. Ganesh Pooja is performed when the Barat along with Groom arrives at bride’s place. This ceremony is called 'Jaanavaasam'. Mangal Snanam, an auspicious bath is performed on the dawn of the wedding day.


Kokam flowers are use to decorate the Mandapam, where the wedding ceremony is performed. This is where the ceremony of Kanyadaan is performed. In this ceremony the bride’s father sit on the sack of the paddy and the bride seated on his lap.After this the Panigrahan ceremony takes place along with Havan. Then the bride and the groom go around the sacred fire seven times in a ritual called 'Saptapadi'. Most importantly, the groom ties a yellow thread with a pendant called the `Taali` to the girl`s neck.


Nalungu is fun ceremony in which the bride and the groom are given a coconut to play with and families and friends showers flower on both of them. At the time of 'Grihpravesh' the bride is welcomed into her new home and family after taking a leave from the bride`s family.
